People Data Labs vs ZoomInfo: Products, Pricing & Evaluation

Two different approaches to B2B data enrichment: an API-oriented data provider and a sales-intelligence platform. Compare current product scope and test both on your own data.

People Data Labs (PDL) and ZoomInfo get compared often, but they're materially different products serving different buyers. ZoomInfo is a full sales intelligence platform. PDL is a data API. Comparing them head-to-head is like comparing Salesforce to a database: one is a product, the other is an ingredient.

That said, both companies sell B2B contact and company data used for enrichment, and if you're evaluating data providers for your CRM, you need to understand what each offers and where the tradeoffs are.

Product scope and public evidence

Check current official vendor materials and a dated proposal, then test each option with the same representative sample, field list, provenance rules, and export requirements.

Use the vendors' own current materials for product claims: People Data Labs documentation and ZoomInfo's product site. Record the date reviewed because packaging, fields, and workflows change.

Estimated revenue as a data field

Both products may expose an estimated-revenue field for companies in their datasets. For private companies, that value is modeled rather than audited. Treat it as a segmentation band, document the source and retrieval date, and validate the threshold if it drives routing, territory design, or an automated decision.

A practical test uses companies with known financials or trusted internal bands. Score whether each provider places them in the correct band, how often the field is missing, and how the result varies by geography, industry, and company size. That evidence is more useful than a general claim about either vendor.

How should you compare coverage?

Published record counts are easy to misread because vendors can count different entity types, markets, identities, historical records, and fields. Check each vendor's current documentation and ask what is included in the number before using it in a buying decision.

Data quality versus record count

A larger published count does not acceptance criteria more usable matches for a particular ICP. Build a stratified sample that reflects your real mix of geography, company size, seniority, and field requirements. Preserve known-good values so reviewers can calculate false updates as well as fills.

Report matched share and correctness separately. A provider can return more records while introducing more incorrect values. Also record the timestamp and validation method for emails and phones; a single overall score can hide material differences between fields.

Product Model: API vs. Platform

This is the fundamental difference and it determines which one is right for your team.

People Data Labs: API-First

PDL sells raw data access through a REST API. You write code (or use a tool that integrates with their API) to query their database. There's no dashboard, no prospecting UI, no intent data, no CRM integration out of the box. You get the data and build whatever you want with it.

This makes PDL the choice for:

  • Engineering teams building enrichment into their own products
  • Data teams that want raw data for analysis and modeling
  • Companies using orchestration tools like Clay that can call PDL's API
  • Anyone who needs flexible, programmatic access to person and company data

ZoomInfo: Full Platform

ZoomInfo is a complete sales intelligence suite. You get a web application with search, prospecting, intent signals, buyer engagement, workflow automation, and native CRM integrations. Sales reps can use it without writing a line of code.

This makes ZoomInfo the choice for:

  • Sales teams that need a turnkey prospecting tool
  • Revenue operations teams that want CRM enrichment with a GUI
  • Companies that want intent data alongside contact data
  • Organizations without engineering resources to build custom integrations

The key question: Do you have engineers who can integrate an API, or do you need a platform your sales team can log into? If the former, PDL is worth evaluating. If the latter, ZoomInfo (or a similar platform) is what you need.

How should you compare current pricing?

Use People Data Labs' current pricing page and a current ZoomInfo proposal for the exact products being evaluated. Do not carry a third-party price range into a budget as though it were a quote.

Normalize both options to the same workload. Include seats, credits or API calls, minimum term, overages, needed fields, unmatched-record treatment, implementation, engineering, review time, and next term mechanics. Divide total outlay by the count of records meeting the acceptance criteria instead of the raw row count.

For an API product, include integration and maintenance effort. For a platform, include administration, user workflow, exports, and CRM reconciliation. A lower vendor quote can still produce a higher total outlay when operating work is omitted.

When to Use Each

The right fit depends on whether you need an API building block, a sales platform, or finished data delivered to your system.

Choose People Data Labs When:

  • You have engineering resources to build API integrations
  • You're building enrichment into your own product
  • You need high-volume enrichment at low per-record spend
  • You're using a data orchestration tool (Clay, etc.) that supports PDL
  • You want to combine multiple data sources in a waterfall
  • You prefer usage-oriented pricing and have verified the current plan

Choose ZoomInfo When:

  • Your sales team needs a prospecting interface
  • You want native CRM enrichment without custom code
  • You need intent data alongside contact data
  • The platform workflow performs well on your representative sample
  • You don't have engineering bandwidth for API integrations
  • You want a single vendor for data + engagement + intelligence

Use Both Together When:

A multi-provider waterfall can send non-matches from one source to the other. Choose the order from measured correctness, coverage, latency, and spend. Preserve provider and retrieval-date provenance for each accepted value.

How should you assess privacy and compliance?

Review each vendor's current privacy notice, data-processing terms, product documentation, data sources, permitted uses, security materials, retention rules, and data-subject request process. Terms can differ by product and jurisdiction.

A vendor's privacy program covers the vendor's operations. Buyers still need a documented purpose, source record, minimization rule, suppression process, deletion workflow, and counsel review for each country and outreach channel.

For operational control, store the provider, retrieval date, and validation status with each accepted field. That provenance supports corrections, suppression, vendor changes, and future audits.

What Are the Alternatives to Both?

PDL and ZoomInfo represent different product models, and other options span prospecting platforms, orchestration, CRM-native enrichment, and managed delivery.

Build a shortlist from the workflow you need, then use the alternatives guide to identify candidates. Verify product scope and current pricing on each vendor's own site. CRM-native enrichment and orchestration products can be useful categories when direct API access or a separate prospecting platform is not the right fit.

How to test correctness before you commit

Test both vendors on the same representative CRM sample. Score matched, correct, usable, unresolved, and rejected records under one written rule, then compare mailbox-validation status separately. Keep the returned files and review notes so the result reflects your segment rather than a review-site average.

The Alternative: Done-For-You Enrichment

Both PDL and ZoomInfo are self-serve. You still need someone to manage the enrichment process, handle data quality, and sync results to your CRM. If you'd rather hand off the entire workflow, a managed enrichment service handles all of it: sourcing from multiple providers, validating results, deduplicating records, and writing clean data back to Salesforce or HubSpot.

Verum scopes this as a managed project and documents the charge, acceptance criteria, delivery format, and usage terms before work begins.

Common Questions

How should you compare People Data Labs and ZoomInfo?

Compare the current products, supported fields, integration effort, commercial terms, and results on the same representative sample. Company size does not establish data quality for your segment.

How should the two providers be tested for correctness?

Neither provider is universally more accurate. Build a known-good sample from your target market, submit the same inputs to both, and score matched share, field-level correctness, freshness, and email validation under agreed criteria.

Can the two product types be used together?

Yes. A data waterfall can query one provider and send only non-matches to another. Choose the order from measured correctness, coverage, latency, and spend on your sample.

What is the main product-model difference?

Compare the API workflow in People Data Labs documentation with the prospecting workflow in ZoomInfo product materials. Focus on the work your team will operate, the fields returned, and the results on the same sample.

How should privacy requirements be evaluated?

Both vendors publish privacy materials. Review the current notices and the dated agreement for the exact product, then document the buyer's purpose, permitted sources and fields, retention, deletion, and outreach controls.

What other product models should be compared?

Other categories include prospecting platforms, provider-orchestration tools, CRM-native enrichment, and managed services. Shortlist products by workflow, verify current vendor documentation and the written proposal, and test each option on the same sample.

How do I know which provider is more accurate for my data?

Run the same representative known-good sample through both vendors and score matched share, correctness, freshness, and email validation. Your segment-level evidence is more useful than a general correctness claim.

Rome Thorndike runs Verum. He spent a decade as both a builder of CRM systems and a user of them, and the problem he kept seeing was the same on both sides: the contact data goes out of date and the people who depend on it stop trusting the platform.
