Your data enrichment vendor says they deliver 95% accuracy. Your sales team says half the emails bounce. Someone's wrong, and it's almost never the sales team.
The gap between vendor-reported accuracy and real-world performance is one of the most expensive problems in B2B data. It's not that vendors are lying, exactly. It's that the way they measure accuracy and the way your team experiences accuracy are two different things.
Here's how to measure what's actually happening with your enriched data.
Match Rate vs Accuracy: The Distinction That Matters
These two metrics get conflated constantly, and the confusion costs companies real money.
Match rate is the percentage of records that received a value for a given field. You submitted 10,000 contacts and 8,000 got an email address. That's an 80% match rate.
Accuracy is the percentage of matched values that are correct. Of those 8,000 email addresses, how many are deliverable and belong to the right person? If 600 bounce and another 400 deliver to someone who left the company, your accuracy is 87.5%. Not bad, but a far cry from 95%.
A vendor can inflate match rates by returning best-guess data. An email constructed from a common pattern ([email protected]) might count as a "match" even when no verification was done. That inflates the match rate while tanking accuracy.
Measure both. Report them separately. Never let a vendor combine them into a single metric.
The Four Levels of Accuracy Measurement
Level 1: Automated verification (table stakes)
This is the bare minimum. Run enriched emails through an SMTP verification tool to check deliverability. Check phone numbers against a carrier lookup to confirm they're active lines, not disconnected. Validate company URLs resolve to live websites.
Automated verification catches the obvious junk: invalid email syntax, disconnected phones, defunct companies. It does not catch subtle errors like emails that deliver to the wrong person, phones that ring to a general line instead of a direct dial, or titles that are six months stale.
Cost: $0.001-$0.005 per record. Run it on every enrichment batch.
Level 2: Manual spot-check (required quarterly)
Pull 50-100 random records from each enrichment batch. For each record, verify independently:
- Email: Send a test message. Did it deliver? Did the auto-reply (if any) match the expected contact?
- Phone: Call the number. Did you reach the right person, or at least the right company?
- Title: Check LinkedIn. Does the enriched title match the current title?
- Company: Is this person still at the enriched company?
This is tedious. It takes 2-4 hours per batch of 50 records. It's also the only way to get a real accuracy number. Automated tools can't tell you if a working email address belongs to the right person. A human checking LinkedIn can.
Level 3: Downstream signal tracking (ongoing)
Your sales and marketing activities generate accuracy signals constantly. Track them:
- Email bounce rate: Hard bounces from outbound campaigns (target: under 3%)
- Phone connect rate: Percentage of dials that reach the named contact (target: 15%+ for direct dials)
- Title mismatch rate: How often reps flag that a contact's title is wrong in the CRM
- Company mismatch rate: How often contacts have moved to a different company than what's listed
These aren't precision measurements, but they're excellent leading indicators. If your email bounce rate spikes from 2% to 6% over a quarter, something changed in your enrichment quality. Investigate before it gets worse.
Level 4: Cohort decay analysis (advanced)
B2B data decays at roughly 2-3% per month. But that's an average, and averages hide a lot. Track accuracy by enrichment cohort: records enriched in January, February, March, and so on. Measure the accuracy of each cohort over time.
This tells you two things: how quickly your enriched data decays (which determines re-enrichment frequency), and whether your vendor's accuracy is improving or declining over time. If January cohorts and June cohorts have the same 90-day accuracy, your vendor is consistent. If June is measurably worse, you have a vendor problem, not a decay problem.

Match rate benchmark: 40-65%. Accuracy benchmark: 70%+ of direct dials should connect to the named person or their voicemail. This is the hardest field to enrich accurately. Direct dial coverage varies enormously by seniority (C-suite is harder), industry, and geography. If a vendor promises 80%+ direct dial match rates, ask for a test batch.
Job titles
Match rate benchmark: 85-95%. Accuracy benchmark: 85%+ should match LinkedIn within the last 6 months. Titles are easy to find but hard to keep current. The average B2B contact changes titles every 2.5 years, and it takes data providers 3-6 months to catch the change. Freshness matters more than match rate for titles.
Company firmographics (size, revenue, industry)
Match rate benchmark: 90%+. Accuracy benchmark: 85%+ for employee count within one band (e.g., 50-200 vs 200-500), 80%+ for revenue within one band. These fields change less frequently than contact data, but they're also harder to verify. Self-reported data on LinkedIn or company websites often conflicts with third-party estimates. Pick a source of truth and stick with it.

Vendors test accuracy on their own sample datasets, which are curated to include contacts that are easy to enrich. Enterprise companies with large web footprints, well-known executives, frequently crawled domains. Your data probably includes harder targets: SMB contacts, niche industries, people who don't have LinkedIn profiles. Vendor benchmarks will overstate what you'll get.
Segment-specific reporting
A vendor might achieve 92% accuracy on technology companies and 68% on manufacturing. If they report the blended average as "85% accuracy" and your ICP is manufacturing, you're getting the 68% experience.
Measuring at the record level, not the field level
If a record has 10 fields and 8 are correct, some vendors count that as a "match" with "80% field accuracy." But if the two wrong fields are email and phone, that record is useless for outbound, and "80% accurate" is misleading.
Ignoring staleness
An email address that was correct when enriched but belongs to someone who left the company two months ago counts as "accurate" at enrichment time. The vendor's accuracy metric looks fine. Your bounce rate tells a different story.
Building an Accuracy Monitoring System
You don't need a data science team for this. You need a spreadsheet and discipline.
Weekly: check leading indicators
Pull email bounce rates from your marketing automation or outbound tool. Pull phone connect rates from your dialer. If either moves more than 5 percentage points from your rolling average, flag it for investigation.
Monthly: run automated verification
SMTP-verify a random sample of 500-1,000 enriched records from the past 30 days. Track the deliverability rate month over month. This catches gradual degradation before it becomes a crisis.
Quarterly: do the manual spot-check
50 records. LinkedIn verification of title and company. Email send test. Phone call test. Record results in a tracking spreadsheet. Compare quarter over quarter. This is your ground truth.
Annually: full vendor review
Compile quarterly accuracy data. Compare against vendor SLAs and against alternative vendors (run a competitive test batch). Decide whether to renew, renegotiate, or switch. What to Do When Accuracy Falls Short
Identifying poor accuracy is step one. Here's step two.
If accuracy drops on specific fields but not others, the issue is likely a single data source within the vendor's waterfall that degraded. Ask them to investigate and, if possible, route around the problematic source.
If accuracy drops across all fields simultaneously, the issue is more fundamental: either your ICP shifted into a harder-to-enrich segment, or the vendor's overall data quality declined. A test batch with a competing vendor will tell you which.
If accuracy was never good to begin with, you have a vendor selection problem. Go back to vendor evaluation basics and run competitive test batches.
The companies that get the best results from data enrichment aren't the ones with the most expensive vendors.
